NP Rank:
Red Wine May Slow Aging
A glass of red wine a day may keep those wrinkles away...
Red wine may be much more potent than was thought in extending human lifespan, researchers say in a new report that is likely to give impetus to the rapidly growing search for longevity drugs.
The study is based on dosing mice with resveratrol, an ingredient of some red wines. Some scientists are already taking resveratrol in capsule form, but others believe it is far too early to take the drug, especially using wine as its source, until there is better data on its safety and effectiveness.
The report is part of a new wave of interest in drugs that may enhance longevity. On Monday, Sirtris, a startup founded in 2004 to develop drugs with the same effects as resveratrol, completed its sale to GlaxoSmithKline for $720 million.
“The upside is so huge that if we are right, the company that dominates the sirtuin space could dominate the pharmaceutical industry and change medicine,” Dr. David Sinclair of the Harvard Medical School, a co-founder of the company, said Tuesday.
Serious scientists have long derided the idea of life-extending elixirs, but the door has now been opened to drugs that exploit an ancient biological survival mechanism, that of switching the body’s resources from fertility to tissue maintenance. The improved tissue maintenance seems to extend life by cutting down on the degenerative diseases of aging.

If it helps slow aging, we all should have another glass of wine.

I think a good glass of wine is relaxing. That in itself probably helps slow aging.

Whether the health benefits of red wine are tied to resveratrol or are simply a byproduct of the relaxation and inner peace one achieves when settling back with a glass, it's inarguable that red wine -- in moderation -- is a marvelous mood lift, and a fantastic boost to body and spirit.

A fine way to display wine without using floor or counter space. This is a stave from a wine barrel which includes the sections of bands that held the barrel together. It's sealed with a clear danish oil leaving the beauty of the wood and stains from the wine to show.

Todd Smith This is Good Stuff. I have red wine to enjoy very often. I also make functional art out of the wine barrels. That sure makes my shop smell good. :)

This is a collection of Niagara Region wines, produced in Ontario, Canada. It is a wonderful area to discover new wines and go on tasting excursions and tours. Highly recommended in the late Summer and early Fall months.
While I have traditionally been more of a beer afficianado, my Wife and I truly enjoyed the experience of tasting these wonderful wines from the region. I do believe in the health qualities associated with wine. They are rich in antioxidants, which are being researched for impeding such afflictions as Alzheimer's.

I recently went for a lunchtime meal at the Red Lion public house in the village of Studham, near Whipsnade Zoological Park in UK. In one corner was a display of glasses backlit with red light, giving a really cosy effect. I had to take the photo, after all 'red' and 'wine' go so well together ans I naturally had to enjoy a glass myself at with lunch!

This is a wine rack that was made from oak flooring scraps. It fits neatly into a small under-stair wine cellar that has a wrought iron gate to secure the contents.

I'm not a big drinker, but I have such a strong passion for the intricacies involved in its creation. So I drink my 1 glass a day and I bother to organise wine appreciation courses I love it that much.
