Russell Brand Files for Divorce from Katy Perry

Following rumors that their marriage was on the downslide, it has been confirmed that Katy Perry and Russell Brand are heading for a divorce.

According to TMZ, the "Arthur" actor has submitted legal papers to bring an end to his fourteen month wedlockto the "Hot N Cold" singer.

The Superior Court filing, which lists Perry by her given name of Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, does not list a date of separation. 

The report adds that Brand opted to cite the typical catchall of "irreconcilable differences" as the reason behind the parting, with the couple having tied the knot in India back on October 23, 2010.

Just hours after the news of his split hit headlines, Russell released a statement to PEOPLE which read, "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage." He added, "I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."

The move comes just weeks after the 36-year-old denied any relationship woes during an appearance on Ellen. While engaged in a chat with the TV show host, Brand was asked about the perpetual tabloid gossip involving him and Perry, to which he jokingly replied, "What?! She should have told me!"

The always-humorous Brit then went on to describe the Internet as a "wicked little liar."

"I'm really happily married ... I’m married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge. I’m still alive," he said.

Unfortunately, the seemingly far-fetched possibility of a break up became a reality when the “Firework” songstress and her “Get Him To the Greek” stud spent the Christmas holiday on opposite ends of the globe, with Katy flying to Hawaii while Russell chilled out in Cornwall.

According to an inside source, the distance was due to a heated argument they had that ended in an explosive exchange of expletives.

"They had a massive fight. She was like, 'F--k you. I'm going to do my own thing.' Russell replied, 'Fine, f--k you too.'"

"They haven't split up just yet, but things are not good. The fighting is getting worse. Katy doesn't think Russell respects her parents' Christian beliefs or her friends. The split may come soon, but they are both so dramatic and volatile, the relationship could become great again." 

Prior to December 25th, the pair had been spotted out separately, both without their wedding rings.
