While his fellow scientists are trying to understand the origins of Bing Bang at CERN, Vladimir Rudenov is trying to get to the root of a scientific problem much closer to home…smelly feet. The concept is simple: unpleasant feet odors are coming from bacteria digesting organic matter in our sweat. Hence, to get rid of smells, one has to get rid of bacteria. Solution? Weave nanofibers of silver, a known toxic antimicrobial agent, into socks, says Rudenov. No one experimented with the idea before him, so inventing the technology to weave silver fibers into socks and make them wearable is what makes Rudenov’s work important. Moreover, his biotech start up business is advancing biotech industry in Russia, which is still largely underdeveloped.
"I used to be a physician. There's a well known fact that silver kills most bacteria, and it's the bacteria that causes smelly feet. So I thought, why not blend nano particals of silver with socks? And it worked!" said Rudenov.

The company now sells the nano-enchanced socks for about $10 dollars. Experts in nano-technology are encouraged by the fact that ventures like Vladimir's are starting to emerge in Russia.

The market for nanotechnology is forecast to reach billions of dollars. And Russia wants to be among its big players.

And while nano-tech materials may help some overcome the problem of smelly feet, others hope it will help them sniff out big deals.

There are, apparently, concerns over environmental impact with the use of these socks:

And besides that, some people (like me) actually enjoy the scent.

We laugh now, but should he be successful, he'll have developed the most marketable running product since the shoe.

That's a good news for many people. Specially for people love outdoor safari!
