Salmonella Alert for Merrick Beef Filet Squares Dog Treats

The FDA has issued a Salmonella alert for Merrick Beef Filet Squares Dog Treats.  The dog treats distributed by Merrick Pet Care have a "best before date of 111911".  The suspect Merrick Beef Filet Squares Dog Treats have been distributed acrosss the U.S. through stores and via the Internet.

In December 2009, the FDA conducted routine testing of Merrick Beef Filet Squares and detected a positive finding for Salmonella. A follow-up inspection found deficiencies in the packaging and manufacturing processes.

Hazard:  the Merrick Beef Filet Squares Dog Treats may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.  This bacterium can make your pet ill ad well as making humans ill.  Salmonella bacteria can be transferred from the dog treats to humans by handling the products.  No illnesses from the Merrick Beef Filet Squares Dog Treats have been reported to date, but the FDA is recommending that you do not handle them or give them to your pet.
