Salmonella and Listeria Recalls for Human and Pet Food
The FDA in the U.S. is issuing alerts for three products that may have Salmonella and/or Listeria exposure. There are voluntary recalls for human and pet food.
1. Trader Joe's of California is voluntarily recalling Trader Joe's Chocolate Chip Chewy Coated Granola Bars because they may have been exposed to Salmonella bacteria. While no illnesses have been reported from ingesting these granola bars, it is important to be cautious and not consume them, because an infection with Salmonella bacteria can cause serious life-long or life-threatening symptoms. It is also important to handle suspect food carefully in order to prevent cross contamination of other foods and work surfaces.
Description of Recalled Trader Joe's Granola Bars
The product involved in this recall was distributed at Trader Joe’s stores nationally and comes in a 7.4 oz box marked with Use by/Lot Codes 16JUL10H2 and 17JUL10H1 on the top of the box and stamped individually on the side of each granola bar. Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and Bloomfield Bakery continue their investigation.
Fix: If you have the granola bars being recalled, do not eat them. Return them to a Trader Joe store for a refund. Trader Joe's has a phone information line at 626 599 3817.
2. The FDA has issued a nationwide U.S. alert and voluntary recall of Nature's Variety Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet. Some may have been sold in Canada as well. This meat is for both dogs and cats. The product may have been exposed to Salmonella bacteria.

3. Estrella Family Creamery is recalling its Red Darla cheese because it may have been exposed to Listeria bacteria. Listeria bacteria are more commonly associated with contaminated cold cuts, but they can occur in other foods like soft cheeses.
Description of the Recalled Red Darla Cheese
Red Darla cheese was sold in January 2010 through February 11, 2010 at the Ballard and Seattle’s U-District farmer's markets, two Seattle restaurants, retail stores in the Seattle-Tacoma area, and the firm’s retail store in Montesano, Washington; a retail market in San Francisco, California; and a cheese shop in Springfield, New Jersey.
The recalled cheese is a soft cheese, 3/4 lb wheel, made of cow milk and washed in red wine while aging. The product does not contain a lot code.
Hazard: Listeria bacteria can cause distressing symptoms and in some individuals may cause death. Pregnant women and unborn babies are especially at risk with this bacterium. Pregnant women are advised to avoid cold cuts and soft cheeses for this reason. There are no reports of illness in connection with Red Darla Cheese.
Fix: If you have any Red Darla Cheese, return it to the store where you bought it for a full refund. You may phone Estrella Family Creamery at 360 249 6541
