There's a Salmonella scare in a hazelnut shelling plant in Oregon.  The Willamette Shelling Company of Newberg Oregon is alerting its customers from both the U.S. and Canada that their hazelnuts may have been contaminated with the Salmonella bacterium.  One lot of hazelnuts was found to have contained Salmonella bacteria.  To be safe, the Willamette Shelling Company is asking growers who have had their crops shelled at this facility to contact them.

All products subject to recall were packed in 25 lbs. and 50 lbs. corrugated boxes with lot code numbers 296091A, 299091A, 300091A, VH3696BO, and 310091A. Those corrugated boxes bore the following brand names: Kunze Farms, Evonuk Oregon Hazelnuts, Canadian Hazelnuts, and Firestone Farms.

Hazard:  possible contamination by Salmonella bacteria.  Ingestion of food contaminated by Salmonella may result in mild to life threatening symptoms.

Fix:  return the hazelnuts to the processor.  For those who have purchased hazelnuts from Kunze Farms you can phone Kurt Kunze at 503 864 2102    For those who have shelled hazelnuts at the  Willamette Shelling facility, the phone contact is Ben Mitchell at 503 538 9256

Amount Being Recalled:  approx. 200 000 lbs of shelled hazelnuts.
