On his March 5th interview on Larry King Live, Sanjay Gupta, who was in the running to be the next Surgeon General, told Larry King that surgery and operative care of various kinds in India costs a tenth of what it costs in the U.S. and is of the highest quality. He said, "750,000 Americans leave the United States every year to go abroad for life-saving operations. Why? Mainly because of cost. It can be up to a tenth of the cost in some of these countries such as India and Singapore." He said that the question we have to ask ourselves is, "how can they do it so much cheaper?" He went on to suggest that healthcare reform was important but warned against throwing out the baby with the bathwater, adding, "Let's target what's broken and focus on that.". He went on to state that it was a good sign that the Obama administration was committed to solving the health care issue.
