Dr. Gupta, you asked how we can help with the growing health care problem. I am a retired physical educator who taught & coached at high schools for 6 years. I then earned a M.S. and taught and coached at college, and later, earned a Ph.D. in sport psychology and taught and coached at the college & university levels. We know that better physical and mental health are the keys to lower health care costs. Yet, physical education in the schools is often treated as something that is not as important as the mental subjects (fizz-ed, gym - which is where we teach, not what we teach, etc.), "gym" teachers are all brawn and no brain, etc.. You know that the positive mind-body connection is what can keep us physically and mentally healthy, even under dire conditions. Solutions for health care in the schools should include daily physical education, attention to positive (and fun) approaches to learning both the physical and mental aspects of physical activity (including for children with disabilities), and learning how to apply the physical and mental aspects to handle stressful conditions. So much of that is free: you don't need to join a club to go hiking; you can lift weights using water bottles, etc. I'm 64 and have the body of a 34 year old. I'd be delighted to donate my time to helping others learn these easy solutions, so that they can apply them to their own lives or pass it on. Take advantage of those of us who've been there to help those in need. Let us all find a way of giving back to this great country of ours.
