Saturday's Corrida: El Juli

Andrew, Jonathan, and I went to Saturday's corrida (bullfight). The three matadors were El Juli (24, from Madrid), Matias Tejela (24, from Madrid), and Mehdi Savalli (21, from Arles). The bulls were from the ganaderia (ranch) El Pilar.

During a corrida, each matador faces two bulls. If he does well, the president of the corrida grants him one ear. If he does extremely well, he gets two ears. If he does incredibly extraordinarily well, he gets two ears and a tail. During Saturday's corrida, El Juli was granted two ears for his second bull. Mehdi Savalli was also impressive - dropping to his knees for many passes and attempting some really elegant banderilla moves - but he didn't succeed in winning any ears.
