The portable machine, named AutoPulse by manufacturer Zoll, consists of a band that wraps around the chest of a patient and can be programmed to squeeze as frequently as an emergency worker would pump with their hands.

Traditional CPR breaks ribs. This device would, in theory, minimize that risk by distributing inward pressure across the chest, whereas human-powered chest compressions focus their pressure at one fist-sized point. Zoll's website claims that the device automatically calculates the pressure required for for a given patient, but I'm not sure how that would work.

My guess would be that it measures the resistance against the pressure and when it sharply increases, it stops pressing.
