Scottish hospital staff face sack for dirty hands
The Scottish Government are to introduce a "zero tolerance" approach as hospital staff are not washing hands often enough.
Those who fail to wash their hands according to set guidelines after the new rules are implemented in January could face disciplinary action and even the sack.
Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon's spokesman said "We are now adopting a zero tolerance approach to non-compliance and all boards are expected to implement this policy from January 2009."
"Serial offenders should face disciplinary action, and local managers should be vigilant in ensuring that hand hygiene rules are followed," he said.
Previously set targets of 90% are believed to have been met.
