A survey of over 2,300 women has come to the conclusion that foreplay as an aid to orgasm has little or no significance. It also reveals that intercourse for Europeans is on average about 16.2 minutes whilst Americans come in on an average of 7 minutes.

The researchers speculate that "It could be that this reflects, a greater appreciation of intercourse and sensuality by Europeans than by Americans."

Many people suffer mental and general health problems when they feel that their sex life or performance is not up to what ever standard the most recent style magazines suggest and whereas this type of research might refocus some away from having to perform the greatest foreplay it now places an emphasis on length of intercourse. One way or another the scientists bringeth us up and then putteth us down again as I believe Shakespeare might have almost said of alcohol in Macbeth or some other play.

As to the American vs European intercourse time trial - well people live fast lives in America and maybe its like in skiing - the 'adrenalin junkies' do the downhill and the 'skills that kills' folks do the slaalam - the important thing is they both get to the finish line - just in different ways.

The duration of intercourse – 16.2 minutes on average – is the clincher, according to the research. The findings suggest that sex therapists, who emphasise the value of foreplay, may have that been getting it wrong.

"In contrast to the assumptions of many sex therapists and educators, more attention should be given to improve the quality and duration of intercourse rather than foreplay," say Professor Stuart Brody of the University of the West of Scotland, and Professor Peter Weiss, from Charles University, Prague.

In the study, reported in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, the academics quizzed a representative sample of 2,360 Czech women of all ages about details of their sex lives, including orgasmic consistency with a partner along with estimated duration of foreplay and intercourse.

Results show that for the women in the study, the average duration of foreplay was 15.4 minutes, and intercourse, 16.2 minutes.

The researchers point out that 16.2 minutes is considerably longer than reported in American studies, where intercourse was found to last on average seven minutes.

They added: "It could be that this reflects, a greater appreciation of intercourse and sensuality by Europeans than by Americans."

The women were asked about " ... estimated duration of foreplay and intercourse." So, let us hope they were not watching the clock, and went to that timeless place you go to when good lovemaking stops the earth in its orbit.

LotusFlower, lots of nights I don't leave this sight until I find one thing to laugh about, and your headline is my fun for tonight.  Sexual foreplay is overrated. Who would've thunk it?

Good article!
I'd say that the researchers (most likely male) who did this study did not realize that foreplay, for a woman, starts wayyy before the bedroom.  I like your skiing analogy!
