Trader Joe's has these new "Beef-less" mock beef strips that are good for stir frys. I thought they'd be an interesting alternative, so I tried them. Overall I think they were very tasty, though I should have stir fried them first before adding the veggies, so that they could get a little denser and more browned. I didn't add any oil to the stir fry either. I'm not a big fan of things drowning in oil.

The look, taste, and texture of these strips is surprisingly good! Its not a perfect sub for beef, but its much better than a block of tofu, bean curd, or wheat gluten. (This may contain those ingredients, but its not like a pure block of whatever)

I stir fried the strips with peppers, mushrooms, onions, garlic, chopped broccoli, and dried tomatoes and served on top of Thai Lime Pilaf (also TJ's) I'm beginning to realize the lime pilaf isn't good for everything. It does work VERY well with chicken, but I digress.

The downside is these strips don't really do too well when reheated. I made 2 meals last night and had the 2nd for lunch today. While it was very tasty, the strips were not as dense as they had been last night, and were slightly rubbery. ((shrug))

So sure, its not exactly beef, but its good if you want a healthy alternative here and there, especially if you've had one of THESE recently.
