Mary poppins sang about it.! A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.

I vividly remember my mother preparing a poltus bandage with sugar and soap mixed.

She would wrap the bandage around the affected wound, and as if by magic on removing the poltus the wounds were near healed.

A spoonful of sugar helps cuts and wounds to heal, a pioneering nurse claims.

Moses Murandu, who grew up in Zimbabwe, is leading the first British trial using sugar granules on cuts.

As a child, Moses, 43, used to watch his father pack sugar on to wounds to help them heal and reduce pain.

He says sugar draws water away from wounds, which prevents bacteria from growing and infecting cuts.

The senior nurse at Birmingham's Selly Oak Hospital said: "Using sugar in wounds has never been done in the UK. Patients said it makes a difference to their quality of life and can ease pain."

So to me sugar as a healer,is not a new discovery. It was for many years the old tried and trusted way for healing wounds. Mother knows best.

Is that what your mother used on a poultice?  Mine had some secret ingredient, never did learn it ...
