Swine Flu Cases Climb To 34 In Canada

The number of people afflicted with swine flu in Canada jumped from about 15 people to 34 on Friday, in what Canada's health officials are calling an 'anticipated' increase in cases. Eight of those 34 had not travelled to Mexico and could be secondary infections.

Cases have been reported in British Columbia and Nova Scotia, as well as Quebec, Alberta and Ontario. Travellers returning from Mexico are urged to be cautious and stay at home if they have at least two symptoms of the flu.

Health officials here announced 15 new instances Thursday, including a 30-year-old man in Toronto and the first in Quebec. Elsewhere in the country, four surfaced in Nova Scotia, four in Alberta and five in British Columbia.
The symptoms continue to be mild and, authorities stress, the new numbers were anticipated.

But that didn't stop decision-makers in B.C. from closing an elementary school in the Okanagan after a student was diagnosed with a mild case of the swine flu.
