Swine Flu Update: 1st Death in Philippines, 30 Infected in China
The first death related to swine flu in Asia occurred in the Philippines on June 19th. The victim of H1N1 was a 49-year-old woman from the Philippines who died two days after she showed symptoms of swine flu. Although the woman tested positively for swine flu, an autopsy indicated that the woman died because of congestive heart failure and severe pneumonia.
New cases of swine flu have also been discovered in China, where 30 elementary-school children became ill after being infected with H1N1. The school, which is located in Guangdong Province in southern China, was closed.
The health department said the students' symptoms were mild, but warned the risk of a partial epidemic was looming in the province. Guangdong neighbours Hong Kong, where many schools have been closed following swine flu outbreaks.
Schools in the Philippines have also been impacted.
About 20 state and private schools have suspended classes for 10 days since two weeks ago after some students were confirmed to have contracted the virus after trips to some of the affected countries, such as United States, Canada, Japan, China and Hong Kong.
Since the swine flu outbreak, 445 people have been infected with H1N1 in the Philippines, while 414 have been infected in China.
