The CFIA has issued a recall alert for romaine lettuce produced by Tanimura & Antle Romaine Lettuce that may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.  The tainted romaine lettuce scare started in the US and has now spread to Canada.

The affected product, Tanimura & Antle Romaine Lettuce, product of the United States of America, was shipped in cartons of 6, 12, or 24 lettuces, bearing an orange sticker on the carton only with lot code 531380. Individual lettuce is sold unwrapped in bulk, unwrapped with a Tanimura & Antle (T & A) logo rubber band, or wrapped in transparent plastic film. There is no lot code sticker on the individual lettuce.

The Tanimura & Antle romaine lettuce was sold across Canada at many retail outlets.  Look for the rubber band with the T & A logo on it or check with your produce provider.  Do not consume romaine lettuce from T &A.

For more information consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday).

You cannot tell if food is contaminated with Salmonella bacteria by looking at it or smelling it.  Salmonella can cause a life threatening illness in those vulnerable individuals.

I live in the US and didn't know about the lettuce - and just recently got a whopper of a tummy ache after eating Romanine lettuce. So thanks for this info - I'm tossing the four heads I have left in the veggie drawer!

I live in the US and didn't know this - plus I recently ate some Romaine lettuce and ended up with a whopper of a tummy ache. Never connected it to the lettuce!  So thanks for this post - I'm now going to toss the 4 remaining heads!

Where's WebMD when you need them????  Thanks Barbara!
