INDOOR TANNING IS OUT

Remember the days of lathering on the Baby Oil or the Hawaiian Tropic Bronzer and lounging around in the hot beating sun of a summer's day.  I sure do and boy, I miss that warm feeling that would emanate right into your bones.  Everyone has their reason for tanning, whether it be they simply enjoy the heat and sunshine or they prefer having tanned skin or they believe that it helps with certain psychological disorders.

A new campaign, launched by the Canadian Dermatology Association, hopes to finally put an end to indoor tanning around North America by sharing the brave struggles of the five women featured in the campaign. The campaign, Indoor Tanning is Out, shares with readers through its web page the stories of Hope, Bianca, Jackie, Aimee and Marie-Pier...

If you are one to still sneak off for the odd tan here and there, you may want to think again!

Since writing this today I found an article that disputed the facts given by the CDA.  I felt it only appropriate to include it...

There's been a lot of research done here on sunbeds and their affects, particularly with regard to youngsters, many want them banned altogether.

I read that extra article by the association, it's a bit of a worry that their number one "fact" flies in the face of international research findings, and their number two "fact" fails to mention that the reason for reduced incidences of skin cancer are mostly down to people being better informed of the dangers of tanning.

But then they are a vested interest party on this, I know they say they are non profit making, that doesn't always mean they don't get paid, it often means they spend and pay out everything they charge, usually in their own salaries, one things for sure with a name like that I think I'll just look elsewhere for information.

I found that video to be dishonest.  They begin by spouting statistics for Canada  "one in seven people in Canada will develop skin cancer" and then say "one person dies of skin cancer every seven hours."  First off, what's with the number seven here?  Secondly, the first stat is for Canada but the second is for the whole globe.  It has to be because there just aren't enough people in Canada to fill that statistic!  Such misleading statements in a video designed to "educate" me to the error of my ways smack deeply of ignorant fervour.

I truly believe that a proper sun-produced slowly grown tan gotten from normal outdoor activity decreases your risk of skin damage, including premature aging.  I have tanned myself since childhood.  I am a blond with hazel eyes and my skin turns a mellow golden brown by midsummer.  Even in winter some tan remains on my arms and legs.  At age 46 I still look to be in my early 30s and most of the aging evident is from gravitational sagging, not dry wrinkly skin.

It's burning your fair skin in a marathon session that damages it, or letting it be dried in the wind or just not taking proper care of yourself.  As to whether the wide variety of goofy creams people slather on themselves play a part, we'll have to wait for another study.
