In an ever widening scandal the third mass lead poisoning scare in China is coming to light. This time 200 more children have been confirmed at affected.
The China Daily newspaper said on Monday that 200 children have been poisoned in Tongdu, a township in the south-western province of Yunnan.
The paper said that local parents were accusing a nearby industrial park of causing lead poisoning.
The children and their families reside near an industrial park. Local officials have dismissed the accusations that an industrial park is to blame for the high lead levels in the children, instead pointing to lead from car exhausts.
This brings to over 2 000 children in China poisoned by lead in this current scare. Various treatments may remove some lead from the body, but often the damage done is irreversible. The most vulnerable to damage are the unborn and young. Damage can range widely from mild mental impairment to death.
China's massive economic growth in recent years has often seen pollution controls take a far back seat to production schedules.
