For Those We Love: Diabetes Awareness Month
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Amber shares her personal story about her grandmother’s struggle with diabetes as well as resources and information about this epidemic disease.
One of the significant people in my life that led me to work in public health was my grandmother.
It was my grandmother who frequently told me to go to school because “education is the one thing they can’t take away from you.” It was my grandmother who prompted me to pursue an education in exercise and sport science, and thereby public health and physical activity, partly due to her own physical conditions.
My grandma suffered from diabetes, which eventually led to congestive heart failure and her passing more than fifteen years ago.
