Toxic 12 List: A Dozen Dangerous Makeup Ingredients to Avoid

The Toxic 12 List is a buzz phrase that keeps popping up in healthy living circles but nobody is really sure what the term means.  While it clearly relates to 12 toxic things, to the casual observer the items in question remain unclear.  Time to clear up the mystery.

The list is every bit as sinsister as it sounds and women everywhere should make themselves aware of the dubious Toxic 12.  The Toxic 12 List is a list of ingredients that are used in many consumer grooming and beauty products and that are known to be harmful to humans.  Some of these Toxic 12 ingredients have even been found in baby products.

The 12 ingredients on the list are most commonly used in makeup and cosmetics leaving many women's groups puzzled as to why they have not yet been banned.  Makeup or cosmetic preparations are used by more than 90% of women over the age of 20 every day. The Toxic 12 List includes pathogens that are known to cause cancer and genetic mutations.

The Toxic 12 List is a consumer awareness brief that identifies a dozen dangerous ingredients commonly found in makeup.  The Toxic 12 List was compiled by former Ms. America Susan Jeske and has been offered online without charge to help women protect themselves from toxic beauty ingredients.

For more information on Toxic Beauty see page 15 of this PDF newsletter from Spring 2008.

The Toxic 12 List reads like most makeup ingredient lists and may seem harmless, in fact most of us don’t notice the ingredient lists on makeup and cosmetics.

1. Benzoyl peroxide
2. DEA (diethanolamine) and MEA (monoethanolamine) and TEA (triethanolamine)
3. Dioxin
4. DMDM hydantoin and imidazolidinyl urea
5. Synthetic Colors and Pigments
6. Parabens (methyl, butyl, ethyl, propyl)
7. FEG (polyethylene glycol)
8. Phthalates 9xenoestrogens)
9. Propylene glycol and butylene glycol
10. Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate
11. Sunscreen chemicals like avobensone, benzphenone and PABA
12. Triclosan

The FDA doesn’t want you to know about the Toxic 12 list because it has failed to control the use of these substances in products we use everyday like shampoo and other hair care products, commonly found makeup and cosmetics, and skin treatments and lotions.

Isn't this incredible- we are a nation of guinea pigs. Europe bans more than 1100 we ban 10. One of the products she recommends is True Elements and its awesome and Ecocert Certified- I have been using the line of skin care for 3 months and I can tell the difference.  I use it with my babies too- who knew most of those cute bubble bath and baby washs have these chemicals and toxins in them?

Erin,

Is True Elements safe to use?  Do you know of any other over the counter products that are safe.

Thanks,

Kathy

I look for these products in Everything now! And it is hard to filter them all out but if we can even "reduce" our exposure and teach our children just a little bit - it's better than nothing!

This is an important story.  Tiny amounts of these chemicals add up over time.

I used Arbonne for 3 years and loved it, until I actually did some label reading for example shampoo had ammonium laureth sulfate, MEA, ethanol, EDTA, fragrans.......the baby products I know had parabens removed recently, but still contain others...I would love to chat more with you regarding this and would love to share with you Glimpse, because you are clearly passionate about this product, but I myself could no longer live with the guilt of sharing it with my family knowing what was in it!!!
