Tokyo Tap Water Unsafe for Infants: Run on Bottled Water
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told Tokyo residents that tap water in the capital was no longer suitable for children under one year old to drink, due to radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi plant.
When tested, Tokyo tap water contained twice the level of radioactive iodine considered safe for infants. Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara said that the water posed no immediate risk for adults, but Tokyo residents began a run on bottled water. Edano urged citizens not to hoard bottled water, so that stock would be available to residents of Miyagi and surrounding prefectures.
Meanwhile, the US banned agricultural imports from the regions surrounding Fukushima Daiichi, and the earthquake and tsunami will end up being the world's costliest natural disaster.
The city's water agency said the spike was likely caused by problems at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, located 240 kilometers (150 miles) away.
