Transgendered Model Closes Fashion Week in Rio de Janeiro
In a city that delights in shocking the prudish with each year's Carnival celebration, Rio De Janeiro's invitation only main fashion event of the year closed Friday with transgendered model Patricia Araujo.
Beto Neves, designer of Complexo B, said he wanted to amaze the public with Araujo.
"In fashion, the cool thing is to surprise," he told O Dia newspaper.
Globo Television's Web site called the 25-year-old Araujo "the star" of the show's final day, and model Isabeli Fontana told O Dia that Araujo "is the greatest."
Tall and slim, the dark-haired Araujo entered the catwalk wearing a long fur coat and quickly unveiled a short black-and-white dress to the applause of the hundreds of guests at the event.
"I love to be mobbed by the press," she told O Dia afterward. "I've always dreamed of being famous."
Her legal name is Patricia Oliveira, but she is known by the stage name of Araujo.
Special thanks to NowPublic's Terri Potratz for passing this story along.

Transgender is a subject I know little about.

158, thank you for stopping by, reading, commenting, and for the recommendation. I would also like to thank you for admitting that this is a subject you know little about. If you would like to learn more about transgenders, you can access wikipedia.org overview of transgenders, here. I do have a link in the story as well. Thanks again!

The truth is that some models have been transgender for decades, but they have been successful in hiding that identity.
One of my friends in SF was just such a case. She modeled, acted and the rest and only a few knew the truth.
So, I don't find this so shocking. This is a '70s story, updated, in effect.

Roy C, thank you for reading and commenting. I would also like to thank you for bringing up the 1970's - a difficult decade for transgender activism. Thanks again!

Great post. I think Beto Neves has broken many ceilings by having a transgendered model on the ramp. This may be a bold and liberating experience in South America but Transgender activism has not got much success in other parts of the world.

Sanjay Jha, thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation. I too think that Beto Neves "has broken many ceilings by having a transgendered model on the ramp." Hopefully, the transgendered of Brazil, who have a history of being marginalized, will benefit from it.

Rhonda I like your post, so interesting specially it's all about modeling and clothes. And Patricia Araujo is so stunning, her beauty is one of a kind because of her tan skin which most women dreamed of. With her bikinis and pose, who will not tell that she is a star.
