In many instances, taking a cocktail of drugs is becoming the norm just to stay alive. Often, medicines are prescribed addressing such things as hypertension. Hypertension that is recognized by high blood pressure puts tremendous strain on the body's system and organs. Kidneys may be damaged and chemistry may be thrown off such that diabetes develops. Each problem gets a treatment of drugs. Each drug interacts with others and managing the body chemistry is complex.

When you watch television, pharmaceutical companies advertise various products with scientific sounding names all with disclaimers about possible harmful side effects. In essence, the manufacturers are advising customers to ask their doctors about their particular product such that the customer/patient becomes a part of the marketing scheme.

Personally, I am working to improve my physical well being through diet and exercise with promise for reducing dosages or even eliminating the need for certain drugs. That results in tremendous cost savings as well as worrying about all of those side effects.

France: Diabetes Drug May Be Linked To 500 Deaths

Manufacturing.Net - November 16, 2010

PARIS (AP) -- French health officials say the now-banned diabetes and weight loss drug Mediator may have been linked to the deaths of about 500 people.

France's health products safety agency is advising users of the drug -- the brand name for benflourex in France -- from 2006 to 2009 to see their doctor to check for possible heart valve problems.

The agency said Tuesday that about 5 million people used Mediator starting in 1976.

The European Medicines Agency pulled benflourex from the market last year, saying it had little effect on diabetes and might lead to a dangerous thickening of heart valves.

In September, European regulators pulled blockbuster diabetes drug Avandia off the market because of alleged links to heart attacks.”

"Because the Wall Street knows well, there's lot of money to be made telling healthy people they're sick".-Ray Moynihan and Alan Cassels in 'Selling Sicknes'

Ethical norms have been thrown to winds by pharmaceutical giants, medical practitioners. Both are governed by the baser element of their nature-greed.Most of the high potency medicines have adverse effects, can damage vital organs like lever and kidney, but patients are never informed. For minor ailments which can be cured by regulation of dietry habit excercise, heavy doses are recommended.

We need ombudsman to regulate this industry for public good.Wheelers and dealers, lobbyists and corrupt bureaucrats all are playing with the health of people.Let there be a debate on greed of pharmaceutical companies and dangers they pose to public health.

The problem isn't the so called "Health industry", emphasis on the industry. It's the growing number of people who don't/wont think for themselves. They spray disinfectants into the air of their home, wash their dished with anti-bacterial soap, wash their hands with anti-bacterial soap, wash their clothes with stain fighters, wash their floors with anti-bacterial detergents. Wont let their children get dirty or play in the dirt. The environment has become something in need of constantly "purification". These same people then wonder why they and their children have an assortment of allergen responses and are always sick. These same people are constantly demanding something be done. Immediately. Gimme a pill that works right now. And no I shouldn't have to change my lifestyle. The Health industry functions like all other industry. In response to market demand. And the public demand is for the immediate quick fix that requires the least change in lifestyle on their part. That means you get very powerful and targeted drugs carried by the blood to be processed to some degree by vital organs like glands, liver, kidney, heart, etc.. It's a sad day when a person is brought into this world where simply coming into contact with someone else who has eaten a peanut can kill them.

"Ethical norms have been thrown to winds by pharmaceutical giants, medical practitioners"

More than a shred of truth in that.

I want the one that lets me eat McDonald's like there is no tomorrow, but the pill won't let it kill me.
