Two glasses of wine a day 'puts breast cancer risk up by 50 per cent'
A study released today states that two large glasses of wine a day can raise the risk of breast cancer by more that half.
I wonder though, what is 'large' exactly?
A study of almost 185,000 women found even moderate drinking significantly increases the risk of the disease.
A single large glass of wine a day raises the risk by almost a third.
Those who enjoy two large glasses a day are 51 per cent more likely to develop breast cancer than those who never drink.
The study - one of the largest of its kind - adds to growing evidence that links alcohol to a disease that kills more than 1,000 British women a month.
Experts believe alcohol is the biggest factor behind surging rates of breast cancer in the UK - and is to blame for one in 20 of the 44,000 cases diagnosed each year.
Drinking is also blamed for increasing numbers of women suffering liver and fertility problems.
Government statistics show a third of women are drinking beyond the recommended limit every week - and the middle classes are heavier drinkers than lower earners.

Thanks for this Amy.
I don't trust this study!
I need to know more about the drinking habits of these women. For instance, do they drink wine with food or by itself? That makes ALL the difference.
I too love good red wine - we share a bottle every night over candle lit dinner - raising our glasses to thank each other and the universe for everything
Of course, they could be refering to the toxic ingredients in commercial wine. In Australia, all commercial wineries have that toxic symbol posted somewhere - for tourist to see as they enter to enjoy the "pastoral' setting
What about all those 'studies' that say red wine a good for you! ... up to two glasses a day have been recommended by "health" specialists. We have to be careful how we read these studies. Who funded the study for a start?
How, for example, can these Uni. Chicage researchers isolate, over 7 years, the effects of processed foods consumption along with the wine, and other environmental poison absorbtion?
People usually drink wine with food. One has to eat when drinking wine, otherwise the wine turns to sugar in the bloodstream, which produces more insulin, which leads to diabetes. The blood can only take one spoon of sugar at a time, any more than that and Insulin is produced to block the sugar. When too much sugar is consumed you get hyperinsulinism - and then diabetes. But by then, with the additional negative effects of consuming too much sugar and toxins from processed foods and environment, –the immune system can't cope.
This is a suspicious study!

I agree - I just saw a study today actually that said that two glasses of red wine a day actually decreases your risk of pancreatic cancer, so who's to say what to believe! I will continue enjoying the deliciousness that is red wine and not take too much notice of these studies. It could be worrying, but if we pay heed to every study like this, we would never eat or drink anything!

Can't resist a nice bottle of Chianti or Chardonnay... Pinot Grigio... Sauvignon... Gewurztraminer...
I don't believe this study... maybe some chemicals in the wine. life is hazardous, i mean you can get cancer from Corn Flakes. So no worries. And how did they measure breast cancer risk anyways?!

'Large' is the decent amount you pour yourself at home and not the piddly little glass you get for £3.50 in the pub!
The French drink a couple of glasses a day. I guess if we took note of all the health reports and studies, we'd never step out of the house, eat, drink or get to enjoy life.
Everything in moderation.
