In an FDA announcement, McNeil Consumer Healthcare is doing a voluntary nationwide recall of all lots of TYLENOL Arthritis Pain Caplet 100 Count with EZ-OPEN cap.

Consumers complained of moldy, musty smell coming from the bottles, but the smell is not suggestive of mold contamination. FDA says the smell might be caused by the presence of trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole.

The health effects of 2,4,6-tribromoanisole have not been studied, but people who have injested the drug from the five affected lots of product developed symptoms, such as nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea. The source of 2,4,6-tribromoanisole is believed to be the breakdown of a chemical used to treat wooden pallets that transport and store packaging materials.

People still in possession of TYLENOL Arthritis Pain Caplet 100 Count are asked to stop using the product and return the product for refund or replacement. People with severe symptoms should consult a physician or go to an emergency room. All other TYLENOL Arthritis Pain products remain available. The press release on Tylenol's website says the TYLENOL® Arthritis Pain Caplet 100 count product will be reintroduced by January, 2010.

For the full list of affected lots, check Tylenol's website.
