Type 1 diabetes (or insulin-dependent-diabetes mellitus) occurs when the pancreas loses its ability to produce insulin, leading to excessive levels of glucose in the blood. Type 1 diabetes usually starts at an early age, and affects 5 to 10 percent of people with diabetes.  There are people with a genetic susceptibility to Type 1 diabetes.
