Forget China, the US has their own problems to deal with.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday recalled 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a California slaughterhouse, the subject of an animal-abuse investigation, that provided meat to school lunch programs.

Officials said it was the largest beef recall in the United States, surpassing a 1999 ban of 35 million pounds of ready-to-eat meats. No illnesses have been linked to the newly recalled meat, and officials said the health threat was likely small.

The recall will affect beef products dating to Feb. 1, 2006, that came from Chino-based Westland/Hallmark Meat Co., the federal agency said.

Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer said his department has evidence that Westland did not routinely contact its veterinarian when cattle became non-ambulatory after passing inspection, violating health regulations.

"Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection, Food Safety and Inspection Service has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall," Schafer said in a statement.

I found this funny drawing of a pig holding the sign at "SeaWorld, San Diego".

I miss Alfred. I tried to save him, but they sent him to the slaughterhouse anyway.

Just found out about the recall, but I am a guy that eats less beef than most. I think it’s a shame that low bidders can put children at risk for just a few bucks. Also I like my beef well done, the same way mom made it years ago. One more thing I have no food laws so I will mix meats with beacon when given the chance.

Healthy beef cattle with acres and acres of green pastures to roam on a clear winter's day. I'm not a fan of the intensive method's used to feed the world's huge population these days, and this shot, for me, captured the ideal of extensive (rather than intensive) farming which is largely now of a bygone era.

In Hood County, Texas, beef catle are still an important part of the local economy.
