One Viagra pill costs 1 yuan to manufacture, or around 12 cents, yet it sells for 98 yuan, or about $12. Hence the Chinese decision to deny patent protected for Pfizer -which has multiple Chinese imitators. China's pharmaceutical companies, many state owned, rushed to claim patents for their "reverse engineered" copies before Pfizer could assert their rights. Pfizer has appealed the decision.
Nothing has a higher priority in U.S. trade policy than the fight to protect American intellectual property. The chief concern about losing control over intellectual property is not that American manufacturers will forego sales opportunities; the fear is that the Chinese will turn American innovations back on the U.S. and inflict much broader economic damage.
