NP Rank:
Vitamin D The Sunshine Vitamin - An Oldie But a Goodie
Some of you may be old enough to remember doses of cod liver oil every morning in the winter. As modern times evolved, the oil was encapsulated in gelatin and if you swallowed it quickly enough, you wouldn't taste the yucky stuff. Your mother told you it was good for you and prevented ricketts. Moms told us lots of things were good for us -- weeding the garden, washing the dishes -- and what the heck were ricketts anyway? It turns out that she was telling the truth, cod liver oil is rich in Vitamin D. Lack of Vitamin D may result in ricketts, a bone deformation disease.
Mom didn't know how much good that cod liver oil did us. Vitamin D protects us against not only ricketts, but evidence is now being accumulated that it helps protect us against osteoporosis, cancers, high blood pressure, depression, rheumatoid arthtitis, diabetes, heart disease and of particular interest to women in Canada - multiple sclerosis. The Times on line stated the Orkney and Shetland Isles are, "the world's hotspot for MS, closely followed by Canada."
The good news is, you don't have to take cod liver oil to get your dose of the sunshine vitamin. In the summer, exposure to sunshine allows your body to make its own supply. In the winter months consider taking vitamin D supplements. The little pills are readily available and cheap.
