Walgreens Genetic Testing Kits: FDA To Investigate Pathway Genomics DNA Test Kits

In an unusual move Walgreens will soon start selling gene test kits according to the DNA Test kit's manufacturer, Pathway Genomics.

Pathway said Walgreen will sell saliva swab kits that are used to determine predisposition for chronic diseases, and response to common pharmaceuticals like Plavix... They can also be used to determine if a person carries a gene for diseases like Alzheimer's, cystic fibrosis, and Tay-Sachs disease....

News reports say the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no record of the Pathway Genromics genetic testing kit and it will review the product.

Walgreens says these types of genetic testing kits do not require FDA approval.

Walgreen said FDA clearance is not required to sell the kit in its stores. The drugstore chain already sells other diagnostic and testing products such as pregnancy tests, paternity tests and drug tests.

"There are people who need or want to know more about their genetic history or their genetic makeup," Walgreen spokesman Jim Cohn told Reuters.

The chain will not sell the tests in the state of New York because of a state law that considers them medical tests, and not consumer information.

The gene testing kits will cost around 20 or 30 dollars. The Pathway gene kit will include a saliva collection kit, instructions, and a postage paid envelope to send the swab to Pathway for analysis.

Customers can then go Pathway's website and order a customized report for additional fees.

I hope anyone with 18 years of child support - not to mention a lifetime commitment resting on the results would have the test done by a legitimate  testing facility at least until all the bugs are worked out.

The sad thing with a test bought OTC is it is the people who can least afford a mistake whose life may be changed by something like this.

I think it's a wonderful tool for adopted adults who do not know their family medical history.

Pathway Genomics will put together a health report (costing over $400 with shipping) based on findings in the dna test listing potential diseases/conditions. One still must do some legwork to determine the best course of action to address these diseases/conditions which may or not occur depending upon other environmental factors like diet, exercise, sleep, attitude, if you take time to destress, toxins, etc. Here, one is addressing illness and consulting doctors, nutritionists, etc. Why not take your health into your own hands with a custom supplement formula based on your own personalized dna report?
