So far this year, West Nile has been a hit or miss for different regions. This is the first year of no Windsor, Ontario cases, while Los Angeles Country just reported their first human death September 12th and Manitoba just reported three human infections.
Across Canada, the number of human cases has dropped from more than 2,000 cases in 2007 to just 15 cases so far this year, he said.

NEWTON — Today, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reports six new human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) for 2008, bringing the state’s total number of WNV cases to 84 with two deaths. The new cases are in Calhoun, Hinds (2), Jasper, Marion and Panola counties. The MSDH reports both confirmed and probable cases to the public.

According to The best advice is to stay inside, avoid still puddles (or ponds) of water, wear jeans and long sleeved shirts, and spray some DEET on!

We had a very cool summer. After like 7pm, the mosquitoes would come out but only for 30mins and the go away.

I don't know what kind of bug this is. Probably a kind of mosquito.

Four new human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Nebraska, bringing the total cases this year to 29.

Two of the new cases are in Hall County, and one each in Saline and Lincoln counties.

No deaths have been reported in the state.

Shot taken in Wheeling, Illinois. Like the epidemic itself; for now the insect lies in wait.

Trying to photograph insects in Winnipeg this time of year is almost impossible at dusk due to the mosquitos. This little kamikaze decided it will feast on my blood while I was trying to photograph other insects living in the long grasses of my back yard.

They are quite determined as can be seen in this photograph, since this female stung me through my jeans.

In the water in a vase in my kitchen I saw some little living 'things' moving around. I never saw them before but my daughter could tell me that they were mosquito larvaes. As I like to make macro pictures I took my camera and tried to make some. This one was the best result.

I'm not sure what kind of mosquito this one is, and I m also not very literate on the West Nile infection, but I was definetly surprised to find a mosquito this size in London.
As a Brazilian who moved around the country a lot, lived in the North East for a long time, I have seen Yellow Fever and Dengue death and a diverse amount of insects in SouthAmerica, but this is the very first time I had mosquitoes in my flat in London.
Obviously they are travelling as much as we do.....

I hope that they will find a cure for malaria and other bad viruses. As I was born in West Africa, I have suffered from malaria before and it is very nasty. I have seen many Mosquitos and I find them fascinating to photograph since I was a kid.

However this Mosquito I have photographed, has a different story to tell. I now live in the Untied Kingdom and the Mosquitos here are like five times the size of an African Mosquito. I dont think you can get infected with malaria if you were to be bitten by one..

I will add more photos of this Mosquito and I will surely photograph different kinds of Mosquitos in the near future once I find them.

If anyone knows the history of the British Mosquito, please do share.

Many Thanks.

I'm not sure if these are a type of mosquito or what, but one thing is likely, and that is there are probably a lot more of them since I took this picture !

hey there!
well first congrats u've got a quite impressive collection of pics!
and about the photo .. it was taken in some place near monterrey, mexico .. there's a lot of huge mosquitoes and all immaginable kinds of insects .. =S
although i don't think this kind is a carrier of some virus or infection, there are certainly a lot of mosquitoes and other bugs that do transmit or spread a lot of minor or more dangerous infections like WNV so ..
good luck with your story =P

This is a mosquito from Tuxtla Gutiérrez Chiapas in México. It is the carrier of the "Dengue", it could be a mortal desease, many people die because of this insect.
