When Being Overweight Is a Health Problem
This is a subject which always confused me as a health care provider because it really ought to be a contradiction. Certainly, obesity is a disease, as it causes adverse changes to our physiology, leading to various other diseases. The concept of metabolically healthy obese people has been described in the clinical and academic literature. What this term implies is that there are people who fit the classification for obesity but who show now metabolic signs of the disease!
Recent research published in the journal Diabetologica looked at 16 identical twins where one twin was lean and the other was considered obese. The twins, aged between 22-35 years old,had an average weight difference of approximately 17 kg or (37.5 lbs.).The researchers assessed all aspects of the twins’ metabolic health.
