Why Republicans Should Support Domestic Violence Legislation
There have been some Republican politicians, such as Tom Cole, who've been speaking up in favor of domestic violence legislation; and then there are others who have been opposing it. This is to reach those people based on what they claim to believe.
Refusing to practice or tolerate domestic violence is a matter of being a gentleman. It is also a matter of having honor. An honorable man, or a gentleman, does not beat his wife. And men who do have no business claiming to be such things.
They also have no business claiming to have family values. The most important family value is how one treats his wife and his children. A man who refused to be good to his wife and his children has no right to claim to possess family values. A man who has family values will be good to his wife and his children; those who do not, have no business claiming to have family values.
Also such a person has no business claiming to be an American patriot. Such behavior is an embarrassment to the country. It makes American people look like brutes. It is stupid, ugly, destructive and brutal. And a true American patriot will confront such destructiveness and demand of American people a higher standard of behavior.
A proponent of honor, or family values, or gentlemanly behavior, or American patriotism, will therefore strenously oppose violence against women. Which means that, if the Republicans are at all serious about what they claim to believe, they will vote to reinstate the domestic violence legislation and to enforce it fully across the board.
