Countries around the globe are trying to solve the health problems of this planet, both economically, and environmentally. Scurrying for solutions, one may miss another problem brewing: an insidious virus.

It is known as the bird flu to the population, H5N1 to scientists.

As of January 24, 2009, according to WHO, there have been a total of 399 confirmed cases of people infected with this virus worldwide. Of these, 63% have died. There is no cure, no vaccination (at least available to the public).

Indonesia has the most reported cases, though the figures have been consistently falling over the last couple of years.

The highest recorded deaths were in 2006 and have been falling since.

No human deaths have occurred in North America as a result of this virus.

The numbers are low, yet the concern is high, due to the high lethality and virulence. It can mutate quickly. It is considered the world's largest pandemic threat. Vaccines are actively being developed.

Health experts are concerned that the co-existence of human flu viruses and avian flu viruses (especially H5N1) will provide an opportunity for genetic material to be exchanged between species-specific viruses, possibly creating a new virulent influenza strain that is easily transmissible and lethal to humans.

...In 2003, world-renowned virologist Robert Webster published an article titled "The world is teetering on the edge of a pandemic that could kill a large fraction of the human population" in American Scientist. He called for adequate resources to fight what he sees as a major world threat to possibly billions of lives.

...On September 29, 2005, David Nabarro, the newly-appointed Senior United Nations System Coordinator for Avian and Human Influenza, warned the world that an outbreak of avian influenza could kill anywhere between 5 million and 150 million people.

...Due to the high lethality and virulence of ..H5N1... its endemic presence, its increasingly large host reservoir, and its significant ongoing mutations, the H5N1 virus is the world's largest current pandemic threat, and billions of dollars are being spent researching H5N1 and preparing for a potential influenza pandemic.

...At least 12 companies and 17 governments are developing pre-pandemic influenza vaccines in 28 different clinical trials.

The mode of transmission isn't from eating the poultry (when cooked well), but rather through the secretions of the bird.

You cannot get avian influenza from properly handled and cooked poultry and eggs.

Most cases of avian influenza infection in humans have resulted from direct or close contact with infected poultry or surfaces contaminated with secretions and excretions from infected birds. Even if poultry and eggs were to be contaminated with the virus, proper cooking would kill it.

SYMPTOMS to watch for:

Symptoms include:

•    Fever
•    Sore throat
•    Muscle aches
•    Headache
•    Lethargy
•    Conjunctivitis (eye infections)
•    Breathing problems

•    Chest pains

TREATMENT is as follows:

There is no highly effective treatment for H5N1 flu, but oseltamivir (commercially marketed by Roche as Tamiflu), can sometimes inhibit the influenza virus from spreading inside the user's body. This drug has become a focus for some governments and organizations trying to prepare for a possible H5N1 pandemic. On April 20, 2006, Roche AG announced that a stockpile of three million treatment courses of Tamiflu is waiting at the disposal of the World Health Organization to be used in case of a flu pandemic; separately Roche donated two million courses to the WHO for use in developing nations that may be affected by such a pandemic but lack the ability to purchase large quantities of the drug

NOTE THE VACCINATION IS NOT AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC

The bird flu vaccine was approved by the FDA for use in the United States on April 17, 2007. Since the current bird flu virus is not considered a pandemic virus, though, the vaccine is only being purchased by the federal government for the National Stockpile.

The manufacturer, sanofi pasteur Inc., will not sell the vaccine commercially. Instead, the vaccine has been purchased by the federal government for inclusion within the National Stockpile for distribution by public health officials if needed.

There is a current poultry outbreak in BC, Canada.

Tests have confirmed an outbreak of bird flu at a turkey farm near Vancouver, but it appeared to be a less virulent strain and posed little risk to humans, officials said on Saturday.

More than 50,000 birds on the Abbotsford, British Columbia, farm will be destroyed to ensure the avian influenza virus does not spread to other farms, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said.

...The 2004 outbreak forced authorities to kill about 17 million farmed birds to stop the disease from spreading. There were no human illnesses in either outbreak.

The inspection agency said it was moving quickly to cull the turkeys to avoid a repeat of 2004, when the virus mutated to a highly pathogenetic form before the outbreak was contained.

It has been around for a long time Sara, however it is mutating fast and like H1N2 its  predecessor of sorts, it is now adapting to Humans.

If not for the great work of the UN and WHO this virus would already have caused a Pandemic and many death. It does look though as if we are going to lose the battle.

Yes I am grateful for the great works by WHO and the UN. The first outbreak of H5N1 to humans was in Hong Kong in 1997. Other strands were identified in 1878.

These are two great books about pandemics past and future:

America's forgotten Pandemic: The influenza of 1918

The Monster at our door: The global threat of Avian flu

These chickens live on a farm that's all "free range". Their food supply comes mostly from neighbors like me that bring left-over food & compost food for them to eat. The even recognize my car now when I pull up.

This virus scares me so much - I don't even think we really understand it at all.

Thank you to Edmund Jenks for providing video. There are many to watch. Most are warnings that China may be covering up the infected cases, that can easily spread to Hong Kong and India, and worldwide. They mention the biggest threat would be for the virus to mutate to a species that can be spread human to human.

Another interesting video was about Biological Warfare, alleging after WW1, only the people who received vaccination died from the flu. Also alleges that vaccines are a good way to reduce population (Medical Mafia). FYI, the USA would be the first country targeted for population reduction because they are seen as the strongest and smartest, and therefore would fight back the most.
