NP Rank:
Yes, Running Can Make You High
Have you ever gotten back from a nice long run and felt really good?
You're not alone, in fact for years it was known as a 'runners high' (many marathon and long distance runners describe this sensation).
It was thought that endorphins were released into the brain during and after intense exercise and activity, but were unable to perform a spinal tap during exercise...until now.
But now medical technology has caught up with exercise lore.Researchers in Germany, using advances in neuroscience, report in thecurrent issue of the journal Cerebral Cortex that the folk belief istrue: Running does elicit a flood of endorphins in the brain. Theendorphins are associated with mood changes, and the more endorphins a runner’s body pumps out, the greater the effect.
Leading endorphin researchers not associated with the study said they accepted its findings.
“Impressive,” said Dr. Solomon Snyder, a neuroscience professor at Johns Hopkins and a discoverer of endorphins in the 1970’s.

This was the final few yards of the Nearly 10 Race at Nowton Park, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk held on Feb 28th 2008.
As you can see the finish is slightly uphill into a park. The distance is slightly unusual being approx 9.5 miles!
