For the second time in more than a year, a recall has been issued amid concerns that serious eye infections are being caused by a specific type of contact lens solution. This time around, it is the Advanced Medical Optics Complete Moisture Plus brand and some of the Internet's most widely-acclaimed medical and health-related blogs have weighed in with their opinions.

Specifically focused on this section is the well-respected Eye on Vision who provided some of the scientific background on what, specifically, is causing these infections. “An outbreak of corneal infections due to an unexpected germ was originally noted in the Chicago area,” the post continues, “Whereas the previous recall involved a fungus... This time eye specialists are worried about a parasite, a specific protozoa called Acanthamoeba. This is a very challenging organism to diagnose and to treat.”

MedGadget, the highly-acclaimed “Internet journal of emerging medical technologies”provides a direct link, through their In's & Out's section, to an FDA-produced document outlining the reasons why AMO is conducting the voluntary recall. It includes a stark warning about the dangers surrounding the specific parasite causing the infections. “Acanthamoeba keratitis may lead to vision loss with some patients requiring a corneal transplant. The infection primarily affects otherwise healthy people who wear contact lenses.”

Reporting AMO's side of the story is left to the MH Today Blog, which specializes in medical health, comments “The maker, Advanced Medical Optics of Santa Ana, Calif., voluntarily pulled it, though it says no manufacturing problem or contamination prompted the decision—they're just reacting to the government's move. The company thinks improper handling of lenses may be behind the outbreak.”
