Heavy Rains in Mumbai – A city drenched. by kaizadbhamgara

Today, on the 14th of June, 2006, Mumbai saw some of the hardest pre-monsoon showers, leading some of us, the common people, to imagine if such a downpour can be called pre-monsoon rain at all?

While some people were glad out step out of their houses and have some fun in the rain, children were found running bare feet in grassy lawns at public parks, and couples were found holding hands and walking under one umbrella, several other people were left fuming with anger as they were caught unawares in the midst of it all, and due to certain local trains running late, a large number of people were discomforted, and on my attempt to contact the local station master at Dadar Railway station, I was told that he was "unavailable for comment". Local vendors who carry on the sale of the products on the road pavements were also visibly upset, and claimed that rain meant bad business for them, as people were more unwilling to step out of their houses to buy their goods.

Local policemen and traffic police volunteers were found trying hard to make traffic flow as smoothly as possible, and due to their excellent and tireless efforts, apart from a few unavoidable delays in certain parts of the city, most of the vehicular traffic was flowing satisfactorily. Hopefully the situation shall return to normal soon, and the promises that have been made by the local municipal corporation to the city shall be fulfilled. However, if these promises shall be fulfilled, yet remains to be seen.

On a day that started out so normally, without betraying the slightest sign of rain so hard, caused several vendors to lose their livelihood for the day, thus making some of them return to their dependent families empty handed, and just to cement this very fact of life, that there are always two sides to a coin, in the distance, I saw a young beggar girl, with eager eyes, desperately asking her mother if she could go and play in the rain, whilst the troubled face of her mother, wrinkled with the stress of living a day to day life, lack of rest, and proper health, and weakened by age, disease, and malnourishment, clearly showed the concern on it, as she looked at the now broken and ruined structure made out of cardboard, a few wooden pieces of wood and some other road-side materials, that she up till a few hours ago, used to call her home. It was the day, often seen in this city, a day tears and laughter drowned together.
