Forty-seven six-toed cats with movie star names greet you at the home of legendary U.S. author Ernest Hemingway, who was born in Oak Park, Illinois, by the way. With reinforced, 18-inch thick concrete walls and the only basement in town, Hemingway and his final wife, Pauline, lived safely here on and off from 1931 to 1961 (when he committed suicide at his hunting lodge in Idaho). Our guide said Hemingway had sufferred so many head injuries during his adventurous lifetime and may have been impotent (not good for a womanizer) in his later years, which led to depression and his ultimate demise.
