Hikers Should Get Educated, Not Rescued by gdraskoy

Rescue teams offer free education in back country hiking  preparation at North Shore Mountains, Greater Vancouver Regional District in BritishColumbia, Canada:

Every summer, dozens of hikers get lost or injured in the North Shore Mountains because they've failed to prepare.

This weekend, the organizations involved in rescuing them are planning to change that.

Representatives from the British Columbia Ambulance Service, the District of North Vancouver Fire Rescue Service, North Shore Rescue, Grouse Mountain Vancouver, the provincial AdventureSmart program and others are inviting the public to attend a free hiker safety seminar at the foot of Grouse Mountain Vancouver Saturday and Sunday. The idea is to teach backwoods adventurers what they need to do before and during any hike to ensure they get home safely. Learn more >>

Hikers should get educated, and rescued when they need to be!

As a volunteer with Search and Rescue I get a bit of a knee jerk reaction to any suggestion that people should not be rescued or that they should pay for it. The title of this article engendered just such a reaction.

As a participant of several such educational seminars (my particular group puts on about 15 per year) we are very quick to stress that you should be prepared, and take the minimum essential equipment, but if you require rescuing call for help!

I can't tell you how many times we've had to carry someone out (think 8 hours of carrying a stretcher) after they've injured themselves hiking in the dark, or thrashing around lost. We can save a lot of time and effort if people are prepared (have a flashlight or instance), or call for help when it's obvious you need it.

 We're happy to oblige!
