Hollywood Hills on Fire
A fire that broke out in a Dark Canyon apartment complex spread rapidly through the hillside of Mount Lee. It rapidly grew from 5 acres to 25 acresby 3 p.m. this afternoon. Authorities say around 100 fireighters and several helicopters are on hand, battling the fire.
"I saw the smoke, and as I got to Hollywood and Highland it was getting worse and worse," said apartment resident Katie Hawkins. "I haven't been able to get to my apartment. Everyone seems pretty calm and trusting that the firemen are going to do their jobs. It's pretty under control."

Some additional details here at the LA times; apparently a film crew from the New ork Film Academy was shooting in the area and got some footage.

I was at Arclight Theatres, which is in Hollywood. After leaving the theatre, I looked to the north and saw the smoke. It was an amazing sight. The colors of the smoke were all sorts of shades of blue, grey, purple and orange. The photos from the car were looking back to the north as I was driving south on Vine.

It was an awe-inspiring sight. I passed several people on Beachwood Dr. standing in the street. Several taking pictures with camera phones, others just staring at the billowing smoke. At the peak of the response, there was reported 200 firefighters on the ground to stave off the blaze. The quick and effective response is certainly to their credit.
