There is an old African proverb about war that says, when two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers in the end. The proverb neglects to mention that, while the grass suffers a great deal, its destruction goes largely unnoticed. We see the trampled grass as being akin, in wartime, to the trampled environment. While there are literally hundreds of organizations dedicated to promoting peace and human rights during times of conflict, there is not a single international group focused on monitoring war's impact on the environment. Determined to challenge this trend, I set out for one of the world's most dangerous places the remote and dramatic landscape of Kashmir.
