I've always hated the Olympics.  The idea that there is something 'amateur' about their practices is laughable and offensive.  They are one of the most predatory intellectual property owners on the planet.  Their hypocrisy on this subject is... well, olympic.  Now the people who organize this antiquated, steroid infested, obsolete, terrorist attracting, mega-farce are threatening to silence the rest of us with their draconian restrictions on such words as 'friends' and '2010'.  Here is the Vancouver Sun's take on it:

Warning: The following piece of bad prose may be breaking a federal law, for which I can get into a passel of trouble. Especially if I put it on a T-shirt and try to sell it for $5.

"My friend and I took a trip on the road to Whistler. I stopped at the Sea To Sky Cafe. There was a lineup. "We're next," I said to the pushy man behind me. I ordered the Top 2010 burger. I gave the overworked waiter a gold medal for patience. Then, driven by nature, I visited the bathroom."

That improbable bit of writing could earn me an injunction, a lawsuit ordering me to forfeit the proceeds of any sales, and the destruction of all offending property -- and not because it really is the worst thing I've written.

It's because this is a commercial used of words that are "official marks" of the Vancouver Organizing Committee, its predecessor bid corporation, the Canadian Olympic Committee and its predecessor Canadian Olympic Association.

I will not go to the Olympics when it comes to town.   These people are not our friends(TM).

I fully agree - Olympics lost politically neutral orientations and became nothing more than just a farce.Unfortunately.

The over all spending and the eye-sore construction going on in this city and the secret donors are a complete waist of "tax payer's" dollars. More then half of the current construction the way I see it is mostly olympics based if we did not have the olympics I'm sure much of the constant construction would not have been the way it is. I sure hope that the left over facilities could and would be used ranging from public community centers, and other public functions to the athletes apartments for low-cost apartments for rent or to social housing to assist with the current homeless situation. In reflection of past olympics and debt I'm sure other cities who hosted the summer or winter olympics will feel the debt and costs in long time to come no matter the financial capacity they may have or not. Gordon Campbell needs to be far more transparent and abolish his "secret donors". yet I don't see that happening any time soon. Transperency it seems to me is a lost cause these days. I agree the olympics nowadays is mostly a fancy over-rated show piece and to qoute the poster above the "neutrality of the institution of the olympics has been lost". I think we could spend on better health care, municiple and other programs rather then a show piece whose tickets cost $800.00 or more for front row seets. But hey that is my two cents regards to this 'show piece'.
