I suppose the Italians must smile and say, 'thank you'

In Milan, the Chinese immigrants are not entirely happy.  Nor are the police authorities.  One doubts that the intervention of the foreign ministry in Beijing is liable to help resolve whatever contentiousness underlies the violence (in addition to that traffic fine, of course):

"We hope that the Italian side can fairly handle this matter, earnestly consider the reasonable demands of the overseas Chinese people and fully safeguard their legal rights".

I suspect Beijing is already preparing its list of choices for treaty ports, probably doubtful still, however, whether it will be engaging Italian or Islamic interlocutors when the time comes to enforce "the reasonable demands of the overseas Chinese people".
