Picture the ad: For Sale: Large castle. 13 bd., 2 bath, complete with bats and secret passages. Perfect for newlywed ghoulies with plans for a brood or bachelor werewolf who likes having house guests. Secret lab and dungeon (fully furnished with medieval torture devices!), moat and drawbridge lend a charming air. Hurry, this one won't be available long!

Yep, that's right: the heir to a castle in Transylvania that is commonly regarded as "Dracula's castle" has been put up for sale. Currently the castle is a tourist attraction, but it can be converted into a private residence after 2009 by the lucky buyer. Anyone want to lend me $135 million?

The medieval Bran Castle, perched on a cliff near Brasov in mountainous central Romania, is a top tourist attraction because of its ties to Prince Vlad the Impaler, the warlord whose cruelty inspired Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, "Dracula."

Legend has it that the ruthless Vlad — who earned his nickname because of the way he tortured his enemies — spent one night in the 1400s at the castle.

Hang on...Vlad the Impaler only spent one night there? What the hell is in there? Did he run screaming out the door like Scooby Doo? Nevermind, I'll stick to my apartment.

When I visited Bran Castle in 1997, it was not a dark and stormy night. In fact, the sun was shining brightly -- not exactly a Bela Lugosi mood. The castle did not look menacing to me. Instead, the tile roofs and white walls lent a Mediterranean character to the turrets and walls. Sighisoara (Vlad's birthplace and a living medieval town) was much more mysterious to me. There are many photos on Flickr for the "Sighiosoara" keyword, so check it out for yourself.

The "creepiest" part of Bran Castle was a corridor that I called "Dracula's Passageway" in my photo. It's dimly lit, narrow, and steep, leading to a blind landing. A German teen kept saying "Christi! Christi!" as she went up the steps. I thought she was going ro break ranks and run back down at any moment. Boo!

what an interesting article. I lived in europe for awhile and I miss the castles.  This castle, inspite of its evil ties, is a lovely castle.

The Romanian deputies consider the retrocession of the Bran Castle as illegal. Now, the sale is under discussions. For sure, until April 2008 will be opened, but I hope it will not be closed. I advice you to visit durring the week days (except monday), because in weekend is full and you need some nerve...
