Iceland to begin killing whales for whalemeat

The slaughter of whales for profit is to begin again in the Atlantic...this news from BBC will undoubtedly alarm environmentalists everywhere.

Iceland is to begin exporting whalemeat from its scientific whaling programme.

Iceland's whaling commissioner told the BBC that up to two tonnes of minke whalemeat would be exported to the Faroe Islands.

Environmental groups say the deal breaches international rules on trading threatened species, though Iceland and the Faroe Islands say it does not.

Campaigners also say the trade could become a smokescreen for illegal hunting of whales.

Although commercial whaling is banned worldwide, Iceland, like Japan, hunts minke whales for "scientific research"; this year its boats caught about 60 individuals.

Iceland is vulnerable to a concerted effort by the World community to address the wayward Icelandic stance on whaling.

In the Internet we have a weapon far more devastating than any exploding harpoon - it is time for the Icelandic economy to be "lined up" in the crosshairs! Let's make Iceland rue the day it chose to ride roughshod over World opinion!

robbie-rob disse: I must say, for a 'city boy' like me, this does seem like a horrific event. With that said I don't know the whole story. Maybe the culling is important for the islands/neighbouring country's? If its not then a horrific event it is indeed.
Now similar photo's are being forwarded around the world by e-mail (I got the same e-mail twice!). Your island are looking at a whole load of trouble! As 99.99% of the world will see this as an incredibly barbaric act.
