NP Rank:
Image overhaul for Oxford Street
London's Oxford street buildings,Tottenham Court Road end, badly need external sandblast cleaning and some of the shop fronts need smartening up. The traffic fumes over the years have darkened the facia's and left the buildings looking tatty and run down.
But the area has mostly Grade 11 listed buildings and knocking them down is not on the addenda, and in any event a good external clean would present a much prettier picture for one of the most popular shopping districts in London..In contrast Oxford Circus, Regent Street, Carnaby Street and New Bond Street look really immaculate, clean and well kept. with a great assortment of top retail stores.
London's
famous shopping area, Oxford Street, needs an image makeover to attract more women and families, Westminster City Council said.Council leader Sir Simon Milton said the authority was prepared to use Compulsory Purchase Orders to revamp the renowned shopping district.

liamssoft, thanks. What's Grade 11? more details on the way these buildings are graded would be quite useful.

Grade I These are buildings of exceptional
interest (only about 2 per cent of listed buildings so far are in
this grade). Grade 11* These are particularly important buildings
of more than special interest (some 4 per cent of listed buildings).
Grade 11 These are buildings of special interest, which warrant every
effort being made to preserve them. All buildings built before 1700 which
survive in anything like their original condition. Most buildings of 1700 to
1840, though selection is necessary. Between 1840 and 1914 only buildings of
definite quality and character, and the selection is designed to include the
principal works of the principal architects. Between 1914 and 1939, selected
buildings of high quality or historic interest. A few outstanding buildings
erected after 1939.
