A wiki to explore "finding additional uses for the iPhone by (legitimately) enabling its potential capabilities" maybe close to "hacking" the technology behind Apple's iPhone.

If true this might mean that anybody could buy the phone and have it registered on any wireless provider.

Several posts are excitedly discussing that the group at iphone.fiveforty.net may be getting close.

Just got the news from Jeff that those cool mothers @ The iPhone Dev Wiki have almost cracked the iPhone.
They have AT&T prepaid SIMS working perfectly

This is a notice to journalists who may have wandered onto the wiki and are looking for the Fearless Leader in charge of the exploit:
This project is a community effort, and as such we have no official "leader". Updates on this wiki are written by those who have an understanding about the project status at the time of a release. If anything posted on this wiki gives the impression that one person is doing most of the work, it should be attributed to bad writing style only and in no way representative of the inner workings of the iPhoneDev community.

Please consider everything posted here a direct result of a group effort that should never be attributed to any single individual.

The Register posted this story:

"Famed reverse engineer Jon Lech Johansen claims to have discovered a
way to "activate" an iPhone without signing up for a contract with
AT&T. The hack allows users to use the iPod and Wi-Fi capabilities
of the devices, but doesn't allow use of its phone features. "
