The World Health Organization advocates the use of manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) as a preferred method for uterine evacuation, including for the treatment of incomplete abortions and for early pregnancy induced abortions.  For more than thirty years, MVA has been used across the globe, allowing millions of women to undergo safe and effective uterine evacuation for the treatment of incomplete abortions, first-trimester induced abortions and endometrial biopsies.

Iran currently uses the older D&C method which uses a sharp instrument during general anesthesia and requires overnight hospitalization. This method is also less cost effective.

To provide a safer and more cost effective method for uterine evacuation, in spring of 2006 FHA introduced the MVA technology in Iran. FHA medical team held clinical training sessions at three public hospitals demonstrating the new MVA technique.  FHA also held several theoretical and introductory sessions regarding the use of MVA technology for medical students at various universities.
