Is Bull Fighting a fair fight?

I went to a bull fight in Seville, Spain in 2001 but i'd probably never go again. I understand and respect the fact that it's a tradition and the showmanship and process itself are really cool to watch but the way they treat the bulls is not fair; it's not a fair fight. i am not sure it's true but i was told that the bulls are sometimes drugged (to make them lethargic) and then they are speared many times over before the matador goes in for the kill.

I honestly think it would be just as thrilling if the bull was not killed at the end but i guess it would be tough to get the bulls to promise not to kill the matadors if given the opportunity. :-)
